Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan’s Assassin. To say her name is enough to instill fear into the hearts of people, even if they’ve never laid eyes on her. If they did, they’d never believe her because Celaena is a very cocky and very confident sixteen-year-old girl assassin. Trained by the best, her skills are unmatched by other member of the Assassin’s Guild.

In this first novella, Celaena’s skills are wanted to deal with the Lord of Pirates, who owes money to the guild. But paying the debt involves trading slaves, something that doesn’t sit well with Celaena at all. She’s going to have to learn to work with her fellow assassin and nemesis, Sam, if she hopes to do the right thing.

Celaena is the strongest heroine I’ve seen in a while, and her cockyness makes her annoying…until she proves she can do all that she boasts about and more. She knows she’s getting into a lot of trouble by defying her master, but she does it anyways. Saving the lives of those people is more important than anything he could do to her. I so wasn’t expecting a romantic element in this novella, and so was pleasantly surprised by it. I wasn’t sure if he was a bad guy or a good guy. He’s very set on following the rules and that made him a pain in the butt, but he’s just trying to keep Celaena safe.

This might be a novella but to me it read like a complete book. It’s fast paced, interesting, with enough character and world background to hook you and never let you go!

Best scene: Tavern brawl.

Defiance comes with a price, and Celaena is suffering the consequences for freeing those slaves. After giving her a thorough beating for disobeying him, Arobynn sends Celaena to the Red Desert to practice disciple and hone her craft with the Silent Assassins. But they have their own problems there. The local army is trying to get rid of them, and it seems someone on the inside is helping them.

Celaena struggles adjusting to her new environment. She’s no longer special because she’s no longer the only female assassin in the house. Her cockiness takes a big dose of humility, because her title of Adarlan’s Assassin doesn’t mean much there. But she also finds peace there. For the first time since becoming an assassin, Celaena feels that being an assassin and being vicious didn’t have to go hand in hand.

Best scene: Stealing the horses.

Favorite Quotes:
~Novella 1~
Sam blinked. “You realize this is the most reckless thing you’ve ever done, right?”
“Reckless, but maybe the most meaningful, too.”
Sam stared at her long enough for heat to flood her cheek as if he could see right inside of her—see everything. The fact that he didn’t turn away from whatever he saw made her blood thrum in her veins. “I suppose if we’re going to die, it should be for a noble cause,” he said.

~Novella 2~
“Don’t you get hot in all that armor?”
“Of course,” Ansel said, tossing her shoulder-length hair. “But have to admit it’s rather striking. And very well suited for strutting about a fortress full of assassins. How else am I to distinguish myself?”
