Review: Crossing the Line by Katie McGarry

Crossing the Line
(Pushing the Limits 1.5)
Author: Katie McGarry
Publisher: Harlequin Teen, 2013
Genre: YA Contemporary
Buy: AmazonB&N

Lila McCormick, Echo's best friend from Pushing the Limits, first met Lincoln Turner when tragedy struck both their lives. But she never expected their surprise encounter would lead to two years of exchanging letters—or that she’d fall for the boy she’s only seen once. Their relationship is a secret, but Lila feels closer to Lincoln than anyone else. Until she finds out that he lied to her about the one thing she depended on him for the most.

Hurting Lila is the last thing Lincoln wanted. For two years, her letters have been the only thing getting him through the day. Admitting his feelings would cross a line he’s never dared breach before. But Lincoln will do whatever it takes to fix his mistakes, earn Lila’s forgiveness—and finally win a chance to be with the girl he loves.

Lila has been afraid of a lot of things in her life, but never of being honest with him. Lincoln, the guy she’s met only once, yet somehow ended up writing to him steadily for the past two years. But it all comes to a crashing halt, because Lila found out he lied to her big time.

Lincoln’s family is a mess, it has been for a while now and he’s reached the breaking point. Screwing up things with Lila, sends him running to her and leaving everything behind. There has to be a way to earn her forgiveness.

When Lila and Lincoln meet they do more than forgive each other. In the course of a few hours they realize what they have is so much bigger than they ever imagined. Lila’s belief in him pushes Lincoln to try and do better in his life, to fix his mess. And fix it he will because Lila is waiting on the other side. In turn, Lincoln is more than willing to be Lila’s pillar whenever her resolve wavers—and it wavers often. He’s the one to remind her of her strength and courage when she thinks she has none. These two couldn’t be more perfect for each other!

What I love about McGarry’s work is that in just a few paragraphs the characters come alive. They pop off the page with their…their realness. I can’t even describe it! lol They are flawed, brutally honest, beautiful in their vulnerability, and the relationships they make with others are soul deep. I wish I’d had these books during my teen years, because these coming of age stories are exceptional.

I urge you to pick up this little novella! Crossing the Line is the perfect little treat to tide you over until you can get out hands on Dare You To!

Favorite Quotes:

I’m so unbelievably stupid to have fallen for a guy I’ve met once. Stupid because nice guys only belong in the land of make-believe.

~Impaired~
She’s stunning. Yeah, she was drop-dead gorgeous two years ago, but now…
I’m staring and I need to stop, but seeing her inhibits brain function. Girls don’t know it, but standing in the presence of beauty impairs guys. At least, it impairs me.
Screw it. It’s Lila. Lila impairs me.

~Change~
I sink to the corner of my bed and stare into the room as if I’ve never seen it. Everything is changing. My relationships are changing, my future is changing, my feelings are changing. My life is one big constant state of flux. I grew up scared of spiders, bees and dark corners in dimly lit basements. But this foe…change…it terrorizes me like nothing before.
For the first time in my life, I wish I wasn’t growing up.
