Review: Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Through the Ever Night
(Under the Never Sky 2)
Author: Veronica Rossi

Genre: YA Dystopia

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

Peregrine and Aria have reunited and have a dangerous plan in mind that involves visiting Sable, leader of the Horns, to find out the location of the Still Blue. But the pass is frozen, so Perry and Aria head back to the Tides to wait until spring. Only his tribe isn’t as welcoming as he’d hoped. All they see is the Dweller girl, the Mole. No matter Perry’s position as Blood Lord, dissent and treachery are afoot. When Aria realizes she’s doing more harm than good, she runs away with Roar to do the mission on their own. Will Perry understand and forgive her? Will she get the location of the Still Blue and save Talon on time?

Through the Ever Night is heart rending emotion wrapped up in action and adventure!

This book started off with a slower pace, but quickly picked up after the forty percent mark. That’s when things get real and I started screaming and cursing and posting the status updates on Goodreads because I could NOT believe that stuff that was happening. I admit, I was scared with the appearance of two certain characters and what it would mean for the heroes. I almost flung the book away, but I stuck through it and believed Rossi would make it better. She did.

Both of our heroes were pretty amazing in this book. On the one hand, we have Perry who is struggling to adjust to his new position as Blood Lord. Not everyone in the Tides is ready to follow him, and many make it their mission to spread doubt among the followers. Add that he feels betrayed by Aria for leaving and we’ve got a very tormented leader. On the other hand, we have Aria who is struggling to decide where she belongs. She’s half Dweller and half Outsider, yet none of those seems to want her.

Aside from Perry and Aria, I think the star of this book is definitely Roar. I’ve been rooting for him since the moment he appeared and I was more than excited to see where this book would take his story. Oh my god. It is a freaking rollercoaster of emotions! (P and A, R and L, A and R, S and L, P and K) I love that no matter what happens between them, the bond they create, Aria and Roar will remain friends. No love triangle nonsense thank goodness. Perry should know that and not get his undies in a twist. I mean, he can smell her emotions! He knows what she truly feels! His Scire power still amazes the heck out of me. I mean. These and the other powers or abilities are what drew me to this series in the first place, and I like how Rossi keeps incorporating them in the simplest and most curious ways.

The ending chapters were so freaking unexpected. I teared up. I put the book down. I paced. I re-read the pages. I still can’t believe it. *breathes* Then someone betrays them, an unexpected ally appears, things explode, another aly leaves and could get hurt, and WHERE THE HECK IS BOOK THREE BECAUSE I NEED IT!? *breathes again* Go. Buy. Read.

Favorite Quotes:

~A sister’s protective streak~
Liv gave a small laugh, making no move to go. “Does that surprise you? You can’t really think you’re the only girl who’s fallen for him.”
Aria felt her face heat with anger. “I know I’m the only girl he’s rendered to.”
Liv went perfectly still. Then she stepped close, her eyes boring into Aria. The welt from earlier disappeared against the redness of her cheeks. “I will kill you if you hurt him,” she said, her voice calm, unemotional. It wasn’t a threat. It was information. A consequence.

~Love~
He told Perry that love was like the waves in the sea, gentle and good sometimes, rough and terrible at others, but that it was endless and stronger than the sky and the earth and everything in between.
