In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.
After the shocking revelations and passionate confession in the last book, Sydney is more than conflicted. Between wanting to find proof that the Alchemist aren’t liars, searching for strength to keep away from a certain handsome vampire, and investigating a killer witch who might come after her, Sydney is up to her neck in problems. Breaking rules is something Sydney never thought of doing, but now she must choose between following the rules or following her heart.
The Indigo Spell is exactly that! A spell that binds you to this awesome world that Richelle Mead has created. It makes you addicted. Makes you want more! And boy does Mead deliver.
It still amazes me how much Sydney and I have in common. From her cluelessness to certain social situations, to her OCD, and caffeine addiction, I totally can relate. I wouldn’t go as far as breaking into an apartment and having to control the urge to start folding clothes (LOL), but that’s Sydney for you. In this third book, she has her plate full trying to uncover a possible plot between the Alchemists and Warrior, solving the mystery of a soul-sucking witch that might be coming for her soon, and dealing with her feelings for Adrian. Yes, Sydney has finally admitted that, but she refuses to deal. For a moment there, I almost hated her for hurting Adrian yet again, but she gets her shit together soon enough and then…well, sparks fly, china breaks, and I scream like the true fan girl I am.
Adrian is as wonderful and charming and imperfect as ever. I love how he lures Sydney with things she likes, because she’s totally helpless against that mode of attack. Adrian has changed a lot from book one, but I think it’s even more evident now. He cares about Sydney. HE CARES, period. There was a moment where Adrian talks about Tatiana, how much he loved his aunt and how awful it is that people never knew her as he knew her. It nearly made me cry. I love that he’s persistent in his pursuit of Sydney, but he also doesn’t push it. He baits her and she slowly comes to him without even know what she’s doing. It’s the most beautiful thing ever.
I don’t know if it’s just me and my uber good mood while reading this, but even with all the serious stuff going on this book was filled with humor every single step of the way. From the mention of Angeline’s piñata incident, to Jet and his terms of endearment, Tracy and her bunny Hopper, Sydney’s reaction to the sorority girls, AYE, Malachi Wolfe’s Silver Tooth Sally, etc. I have more humor quotes highlighted than any other.
There’s magic, there is MAGIC, and then there’s the end. I can summarize that final scene in two words: OH SHIT. Seriously, Richelle Mead has turned into a ninja master of mind shattering endings in the Bloodline series. I’ve no doubt whatsoever that The Fiery Heart will be filled with lots of fiery passion, heartache and drama. I can’t wait!

~His bed~
I crossed my arms and sat down on the bed. I did so out of simple fatigue, but a moment later, I was struck by what I was doing. This is where Adrian sleeps. I’m touching the covers he’s wrapped in every night. What does he wear? Does he wear anything? I jumped up.
~His coat~
“Your coat—you never took it back after the wedding. It’s in my car.” He waved dismissively. “Keep it. I’ve got others.”
“What am I going to do with a wool coat?” I asked. “Especially here in Palm Springs.”
“Sleep with it,” he suggested. “Think of me.”
~His words~
You’re my flame in the dark. We chase away the shadows around each other.
~His thoughts on the dress~
“A piece of heaven?” I managed to ask. He slowly shook his head. “No. The other place. The one I’m going to burn in for thinking what I’m thinking.”
