Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

This is the best villain character building novella I’ve ever come across. Not only did it manage the impossible—for me to love Warner—but it served as a great example of the old adage ‘not everything/everyone is at is seems.’

Warner is as beautifully complicated as he is gorgeous, and boy does he have tremendous good looks. The things he’s done that seem cruel and vicious, all have been with a purpose. There are three main interactions in this novella. One is with Delalieu, his assistant. Warner tells Delalieu he should stand by his convictions even if it means disagreeing with what he (Warner) says. Later on, the beginning of chapter nineteen nearly killed me. Not only does Warner show kindness towards the man, but he actually enjoys it.

The second interaction is with Anderson, the chief commander of the Reestablishment and Warner’s father. Now this guy is pure undiluted evil. In this case, the man is as creepy as he is beautiful. One look at him and hearing him speak, and I knew I wanted to shoot him right between the eyes and give his body to Juliette so she could pulverize it into particle-sized ashes. Extreme you say? Not enough.

The third and last interaction is with a starving dog on the streets. If you weren’t convinced about Warner’s character before, you will now. Because he not only saves the dog, but actually plays and feeds it. He then smiles. SMILES. And it all falls apart when he sees a vision of Juliette watching him. Or was she a vision?

Favorite Quotes:

This girl is destroying me.
A girl who has spend the last year in an insane asylum. A girl who would try to shoot me dead for kissing her. A girl who ran off with another man just to get away from me.
Of course this is the girl I would fall for.
I close a hand over my mouth.
I am losing my mind.
