Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.
Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.
The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.
Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.
Loosing herself was never the plan, but it’s what happened to Alex when the Apollyon completed the steps for her Awakening. Lucky for her, Aiden is there. He will never give up on her and will do anything and everything to bring her back. She has to come back before Seth and Lucian finish destroying the world. Once she comes to her senses, Alex remembers the only one who knows how to stop the Apollyon is dead. So they’ll head down into the Underworld to discover the truth, no matter how hard it might be to bear because Alex might just have to turn into the God Killer herself…
Another great installment for The Covenant series. Apollyon didn’t take it out of the ball-park for me, but I really couldn’t put it down for one second.
Hearing the person you love scream and curse at you cannot be easy. Yet this is what Aiden has to do every single day and not lose hope. There’s a battle going on in Alex’s head and Aiden knows with time she’ll win it, and he’ll be there for her when it happens. He believes that love has to be stronger than any pre-destined link between Apollyons. And he just might be right. Aiden is…perfection. That boy can do no wrong in my eyes, yet he doesn’t think that. I love that Alex is the one who can take him out of his guilt trips. Their relationship shines brightest during those moments.
Alex is a danger to everyone. The only thing she wants is to be by Seth’s side, but when he pushes her too far, Alex starts to find herself again. She will never be cool with conspiring with daimons, not even if ‘her Seth’ tells her it’s okay. I swear to the gods, every time she said ‘My Seth’ I wanted to punch something. When Alex returns to her good old self, Apollo only has sucktastic bad news for her. A war is brewing in Olympus, the gods are divided and one might even be helping Seth and Lucian. Alex knows everyone’s solution for this is to kill Seth, yet she can’t help but think this is wrong.
Seth…Omg, Seth. He’s like the ex-bf you remember fondly but don’t really want anything to do with anymore…until he comes and is sincerely apologetic. There was a moment like that during a conversation between Alex and Seth. I swear it almost broke me. I fell for him in Pure and Deity, and I think that caring and lovable Seth is still in there. He just wants to be loved and Lucian is taking advantage of that, but Seth can’t see it. We don’t get much resolution of this in Apollyon, so it’ll be interesting to see how Armentrout wraps it up in Sentinel. And by interesting I mean it’ll probably give me a heart attack.
The underworld was both exciting and…not. The underworld was underwhelming, I guess, because they were never in any real kind of danger. Spiders? Meh. Hellhounds? Not that scary. Though I admit the Tartarus scene was pretty damn awesome. I also LOL-ed so hard at Persephone’s role. She’s so curious about human things. Thank goodness she has a great teacher for that!
Typical Armentrout ending, it was full of twists and surprises. However I felt nothing for the loss and the save was kind of a given since the series hasn’t finished. So, once again it was a case of ‘they’re not in any real danger’ and I felt nothing. BUT I’m very excited for Sentinel to see how all this turns out.
PS: What do they do at a Covenant University? Are there like specialty trainings or something? I smell a possible spinoff…
Favorite Quotes:
~Sexy Aiden~
My eyes went wide. “Wow. Are you trying to get me naked?” His silvery gaze met mine. “Do you really need me to answer that?”
A hot, sweet flush stole across my cheeks. When he was like this—open, flirty, and downright sexy—I was at my lamest.
~Haunting~
Caleb’s sky-blue eyes settled on Aiden. “And you’re not going to try to hide the relationship once everything settles down?” The challenge in his tone had me smiling.
“Not going to happen,” Aiden told him. “It won't be easy, but we’ll find a way.”
“Good.” Caleb’s eyes hardened. “Because if you do her wrong, I will haunt your ass until you die.”
~Apollo~
“You two should really get a room,” Apollo said from out of nowhere. “My poor eyes…” I groaned. Even in his true identity, he still had impeccable timing.
“Gods,” Aiden spat. He pulled back, casting Apollo a disgusted look over my head. “Do you get off on sneaking up on us?”
“You probably don’t want to know what I get off on.”
I made a face. “Ew.”
