Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

Publisher: Simon & Schuster, 2011
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Buy: AmazonB&NTBD

Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.

She's wrong.

My Review:
This is my brain after finishing this novel…

     *@#&(^!$%^*!(*#&$^&#!$%%!#@*(&!@$&*&*^&(%!!!!!!

Like Mara, I don’t know what to think, what to believe, who to trust…what is real? I DON’T KNOW! But aside from feeling like my brain has been turned into an omelet, I think The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is truly a masterpiece in YA Mystery/Thriller. It’s filled to the brim with suspense, action, drama, romance, and everything you can and can’t imagine. For a paranormal romance this was so not what I expected!

Hallucinations or Premonitions? What is real and what is not? Half the time I was freaking out with the creepiness and the other half I was swooning all over the place because of Noah. After a while I doubted everything that was being said. Each time Mara remembered a piece of memory, I thought I might figure it out, but no. The skipping of time drove me mad. At one point I thought Mara had finally cracked, but Noah was there.

Noah, The scrumptious King of bad boy land. Infuriatingly stubborn, extremely handsome despite his disheveled looks, with a super sweet and caring nature underneath all that reserved specifically for Mara.  I loved every moment of their love/hate relationship with their easy banter and the tension always running high. And he’s English! That always gets bonus points from me.

If the ending didn’t crack Mara, it certainly cracked me. The choice she has to make, and what she chose. Gah. I hated her in that moment. And of course, the final surprise that made my jaw drop and by brain melt. Can’t wait to know what happens next in the unraveling life of Mara Dyer.

Favorite Quotes – The Noah Special
“Is there any point in asking what you’re doing to make me do in Sunday?”
“Not really.”
Okay. “Is there any point asking what you’re going to do to me?”
He grinned wickedly. “Not really.”
Fabulous. “Does it involve the use of a safe word?”
“That will depend entirely on you.” Noah moved impossibly closer, just inches away. A few freckled disappeared into the scruff on his jaw. “I’ll be gentle,” Noah added. My breath caught in my throat as he looked at me from beneath those lashes, ruining me.

“So, go study.”
“But I want to watch you draw.”
I answered him by closing my eyes and rubbing my forehead. He was impossible.
“You don’t want me there?” he asked. I opened my eyes. Noah looked crestfallen and adorable.
“You’re distracting me,” I said truthfully.
“I won’t be. I promise,” Noah said. “I’ll get some crayons and draw quietly. Alone. In a corner.”
I couldn’t help my smile and Noah saw his opening; he brushed right past me into the classroom.

“What,” I asked slowly, as I eyed the animal crackers strewn all over it, “the hell?”
“You were convinced they were they were your pets,” Noah said, not even trying to suppress his laughter. “You wouldn’t let me touch them.”
Jesus.
~
“I hate you,” I muttered.
Noah smiled wider. “I know.”
