Dark Frost(Mythos Academy 3)Author: Jennifer EstepPublisher: Kensington, 2012Genre: YA Mythology
I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.
Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?
It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.
Gwen Frost is Nike's Champion, and after many encounters with the Reapers who want to bring about the second Chaos War, she still wasn't prepared for what happened that winter break. Reapers raided the museum in search for the Helheim Dagger, hurting and killing many of Mytho's students in the process. If she was helpless to stop such destruction, then how is she supposed to stop Loki, god of Chaos? Now Gwen is on the hunt for the Helheim Dagger that her mother hid. Will she be able to find it before the Reapers do?
I'm very excited to report that Dark Frost isn't a total recap session like Kiss of Frost. It still repeats some stuff a couple of times, like Loki's punishment, but the recaps were short and to the point. Estep throws us right into the action, and after that is just attack after attack. There are a lot of things going on in this book, and the Reaper attacks are just the beginning. There are mythological pets running around, and Gwen's and her friend's powers are evolving. There were a couple of surprises too, but most importantly is that we finally learn Logan's dark secret!
Gwen has grown incredibly as a warrior and Gypsy with psychometric magic. She's able to hold her own during many of the attacks, and she finds new ways to use her magic, ways that she wishes she'd never discovered at all. But when it comes to Logan Quinn and love, she's still naïve expecting declarations of love when they haven't even dated or spent more than an hour together. You know, other than weapon training. Gwen also goes on about how she never intended for Savannah (Logan's ex) to get hurt, something I thought was very silly. Like seriously, what did you think was going to happen? But Gwen is still that stubborn, never-give-up kind of girl that I admired since book one.
I was pretty sure as to who the villain was, and I didn't get it wrong, but Ms. Estep managed to throw me off the scent for some chapters there. And me knowing this still didn't take away from the horror that is unleashed in those last chapters. Serious, serious action and drama going on there that kept me turning pages as fast as I could! Overall a definite success in this series. These books just keep getting better and better. I can't wait to read what she brings in with Crimson Frost (Mythos Academy 4).

Favorite Quotes:
~Action~
I darted forward and shoved Vic into the Reaper's chest with all my strength. The Reaper screamed and clawed at the silver blade, trying to rip Vic out of my hands. I tightened my grip, yanked the sword out, then plunged it into his stomach. The Reaper screamed again and stumbled back. He sprawled to a stop on the floor below the dais, and he didn't get back up.
"Nicely done, Gwen!" Vic shouted, his mouth moving underneath my sweaty hand.
"Shut up, Vic!"
~Villain Speeches~
"We've all waited a very, very long time for this moment," she said. "For centuries, our ancestors have served Loki faithfully, preparing for the day when we could finally free out god from the prison he's been trapped in for so long. Well, that time has finally come."
Yeah, I knew I was about to die, but I still couldn't help rolling my eyes at her formal, grandiose words. Practice in front of the mirror much,_____?
~Romance~
Logan gave me a crooked grin. "You won't hurt me. I know you won't."
"How can you be so sure?" I whispered.
His grin widened. "Because you're that Gypsy girl, and I'm the bad-boy Spartan. And I think it's time we were finally together, don't you?"

"How is it that you always know just what to do and say to make me feel better?" I said.
Logan grinned. "Just another part of that Spartan killer instinct. I can slay the ladies just as well as I can Reapers."

"Gwendolyn Cassandra Frost," he said in a loud booming voice. "You are under arrest."
